Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas has told William Saliba he will not start for France at the World Cup despite concerns over Raphael Varane.
France coach Didier Deschamps had added the young Arsenal defender to his squad after his exceptional performance in the first half of the Premier League season.
There are ongoing concerns about Varane’s fitness. The Manchester United centre-half was expected to start at the center of the France defence.
Saliba has already made seven senior appearances for France but Gallas cautioned he still trails two players in the individual rankings.
“William Saliba has had a great first half of the season, but I think it will be difficult for him to be a starter for France,” Gallas told Casino Genting.
“Even if Varane doesn’t play, I don’t think Saliba will be Deschamps’ first choice to start.
“you have [Ibrahima] Konate in Liverpool and [Dayot] Upamecano’s [Bayern] Munich. “
