Zulum announced N1bn for emergency relief for the victims of the Maiduguri market fire on Monday
Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum announced an emergency relief of 1 billion naira to provide urgent support to the victims of the Monday market fire, pending assessment of the incident.
A major fire incident largely burned the Maiduguri market on Monday, destroying goods and property by the millions.
In a statement, Governor Mallam Isa Gusaw’s spokesman said Zulum broadcast shortly after his visit to the scene and mobilized the armed forces to secure the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Here are Zulum’s lyrics written in the Kanuri and Hausa languages:
My fellow Borno State,
“Today we woke up to a very unfortunate and unfortunate fire disaster in Maiduguri market on Monday. It is very unfortunate but we believe this is God’s command. We belong to God and we pray to Him. I feel deep pain from this incident and I know how painful it is for anyone to work so hard over the years To build his business but he ends up losing that investment in seconds. I truly feel the pain of everyone affected by this incident. I sympathize with all of you. I kindly and respectfully urge you to be calm and patient. I know how bad you feel and God willing, the Borno State Government is already taking the following measures To improve the situation:
You have agreed to release 1 billion naira as emergency relief for us to quickly support the victims of the disaster as we know some of them may have a hard time surviving in the next few days. Many rely on daily chores to meet their needs.
“We are in the process of setting up an assessment committee that will include respected members of our community including representatives of the victims, so that we can quickly assess the damages, and make a comprehensive list of those affected and their losses. I will also hold meetings with market leadership and victims’ representatives.
I will meet Mr. President and ask for presidential intervention on how to get support for the victims.
We will also reach out to other humanitarian organizations to request assistance.
God willing, we will take strict measures to prevent the recurrence of the fire disaster that occurred in previous years.
“I would like to respectfully appeal to everyone for calm. I know how you feel. I feel your pain and we will support you by all possible means, God willing.
In the meantime, I urge us not to politicize this unfortunate incident. I understand that the incident is happening at a political time, but we all know that Monday Market unfortunately faced fire disasters in earlier times and that is sad. We have to find ways to ensure that this unfortunate fire disaster does not happen again and we will work together to ensure that, God willing.”
